What is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a widely used medicine that reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

By lowering stomach acid, omeprazole helps to relieve symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion, and allows irritated areas of the stomach and oesophagus to heal.

It is commonly used to treat:

Acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
Heartburn and persistent indigestion
Stomach and duodenal ulcers
Zollinger–Ellison syndrome (a rare condition causing excess stomach acid)
Omeprazole can also be prescribed to prevent ulcers in people taking certain painkillers (such as NSAIDs). It is usually taken once daily, preferably before a meal, and can provide relief for up to 72 hours.

At an online pharmacy, omeprazole is supplied following a short online consultation to ensure it is safe and suitable for you.

How do I use Omeprazole?

Omeprazole should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning before food, unless your prescriber or pharmacist has advised otherwise.

  • Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with a glass of water
  • Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule, as this can reduce how well the medicine works
  • Try to take it at the same time each day for best results
  • Omeprazole works by reducing stomach acid production. It may take a few days of regular use to feel the full benefit, even though some symptom relief may be noticed sooner.

Dose

  • The usual dose for adults is 10mg or 20mg once daily, depending on your condition and symptoms
  • Always take the dose recommended by your pharmacist or prescriber
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
  • How long to take Omeprazole
  • Treatment length depends on the condition being treated
  • Some people may need it short-term, while others may be advised to take it for longer
  • Always follow the guidance provided during your online consultation

If symptoms do not improve or worsen while taking omeprazole, speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional for further advice.

What are the side effects of Omeprazole?

Like all medicines, omeprazole can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Most people take omeprazole without any problems.

Common side effects
These can affect up to 1 in 10 people:

Headache
Stomach pain
Constipation or diarrhoea
Wind (flatulence)
Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting
These side effects are usually mild and short-lived.

Uncommon side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 100 people:

Dizziness or tiredness
Difficulty sleeping
Skin rash or itching
Swelling of the feet or ankles
Changes in blood test results (such as liver enzymes)
Rare but serious side effects

Stop taking omeprazole and seek medical advice immediately if you notice:

Severe or persistent diarrhoea
Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
Unexplained bruising or bleeding
Severe skin reactions (blistering, peeling, or widespread rash)
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing

Long-term use
When used for long periods, omeprazole may slightly increase the risk of:

Low magnesium levels
Bone fractures (especially in the hip, wrist, or spine)
Vitamin B12 deficiency

Your pharmacist or prescriber will consider these risks during your consultation.

What Precautions should I take with Omeprazole?

Before taking omeprazole, it’s important to make sure it is safe and suitable for you. Always follow the advice given during your online consultation or by your pharmacist.

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before taking omeprazole if you:

  • Have unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, or black stools
  • Have severe or ongoing stomach pain
  • Have liver problems
  • Have ever had a skin reaction after taking medicines that reduce stomach acid
  • Are due to have a chromogranin A blood test, as omeprazole can affect results

These symptoms may need investigation before treatment is started.

Long-term use

If omeprazole is taken for a long time, there may be an increased risk of:

  • Low magnesium levels (which can cause fatigue, muscle cramps, or irregular heartbeat)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Bone fractures, particularly in older adults

Your pharmacist will consider these risks if longer treatment is needed.

Infections

Reducing stomach acid may slightly increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections, such as diarrhoea caused by bacteria. If you develop severe or persistent diarrhoea, seek medical advice.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Omeprazole can usually be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but you should always confirm this during your consultation.

Other medicines

Tell your pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including:

  • Blood thinners (such as warfarin)
  • Medicines for HIV
  • Certain antifungals or antibiotics
  • Herbal remedies such as St John’s work

Omeprazole can affect how some medicines work.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Omeprazole used for?

Omeprazole is used to treat acid reflux and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid, helping to relieve symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion.

  • How does Omeprazole work?

Inside the stomach lining are tiny structures called proton pumps, which release acid to help with digestion. Omeprazole blocks these proton pumps, lowering acid levels in the stomach. This helps to relieve symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux and allows irritated areas of the stomach and oesophagus to heal.

  • How often should I take Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is usually taken once a day, unless your pharmacist or doctor advises otherwise.

    For most adults:

Take one dose daily, preferably in the morning before food

Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water

Try to take it at the same time each day for best results

  • How long should I take Omeprazole?

Without seeing a GP for a check-up, omeprazole should only be taken for up to 4–5 days to help control acid reflux symptoms. If your symptoms persist, worsen, or return, this may indicate a more serious underlying condition and you should see your GP for a full assessment.

  • Can I take Omeprazole with other heartburn medications such as Gaviscon??

Yes, omeprazole can usually be taken with other heartburn medicines such as Gaviscon, but they work in different ways.

Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces and is taken regularly to control symptoms over time.

Gaviscon works by forming a protective layer on top of stomach contents to help prevent acid from rising into the oesophagus and can provide quick, short-term relief.

    If you are taking both:

It’s best to space them apart (for example, take omeprazole in the morning before food, and use Gaviscon after meals or at bedtime if needed).

Do not exceed the recommended doses of either medicine.

If you find you need to use additional heartburn medicines regularly while taking omeprazole, or if your symptoms are not improving, speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional for further advice.

  • How long does Omeprazole take to work?

Most people start to notice an improvement in symptoms within a few hours, but it usually takes 1 to 3 days of regular use to feel the full effect. This is because omeprazole works by gradually reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Once it is working, a single daily dose can provide long-lasting acid control for up to 24 hours.

If your symptoms do not improve after a few days or continue despite treatment, you should speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional for further advice.

  • What are the common side effects of Omeprazole?

These side effects can affect up to 1 in 10 people:

    Headache

    Stomach pain or discomfort

    Diarrhoea or constipation

    Wind (flatulence)

    Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting

These side effects are usually mild and temporary and often improve as your body adjusts to the medicine.

If side effects persist, worsen, or concern you, speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional for advice.

  • How should I store Omeprazole?

Store omeprazole at room temperature, below 25°C

Keep it in the original packaging to protect it from moisture and light

Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink

Keep out of the sight and reach of children

  • How can I obtain Omeprazole online?

You can buy omeprazole online through Heba Online Pharmacy. After completing a brief online assessment, a qualified registered doctor or pharmacist will review your answers and issue a prescription if you are eligible.
