What is Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys nasal spray is used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including seasonal hay fever and year-round allergies. It contains fluticasone furoate, which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids.

Avamys works by reducing inflammation in the lining of the nose. This helps to control the body’s allergic response to allergens such as pollen, house dust mites and animal dander. By reducing inflammation, Avamys relieves symptoms including nasal congestion, sneezing, a runny nose and itching.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Avamys can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most side effects are mild and mainly affect the nose. Common side effects include:

  • Nasal dryness
  • Nosebleeds (especially with long-term use)
  • Headache
  • Nasal irritation
  • Nasal soreness

How to use Avamys nasal spray

Always use Avamys exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Before using Avamys for the first time, shake the bottle well and prime the spray by pressing the button several times until a fine mist appears.

  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Blow your nose gently to clear your nostrils.
  • Remove the cap.
  • Insert the nozzle into one nostril while closing the other.
  • Aim the spray away from the centre of the nose (towards the outer wall).
  • Breathe in gently through your nose and press the spray once.
  • Breathe out through your mouth.
  • Repeat in the other nostril if required.
  • Replace the cap after use.
  • After using the spray, avoid blowing your nose for a few minutes to allow the medicine to work properly.

Avamys is intended for once-daily, regular use and works best when used consistently. Symptoms may improve within a few days, but maximum benefit may take several days to a week.

Do not use more than the recommended dose. If symptoms do not improve or worsen, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Who is Avamys not suitable for?

Avamys may not be suitable for you if:

  • You are allergic to fluticasone furoate or any of the other ingredients in Avamys
  • You have recently had surgery on your nose
  • You have a recent injury to your nose
  • You have untreated infections in your nose
  • You have or have previously had tuberculosis (TB)
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised by a healthcare professional
  • You are taking certain medicines, particularly strong steroid medicines or medicines that affect how steroids are broken down in the body

Avamys should be used with caution if you have glaucoma, cataracts, or problems with your immune system, especially if using the spray for a long period.

Our Gp or pharmacists will decide whether Avamys is suitable for you based on your medical history, current health conditions and any medicines you are taking. It is important to tell your healthcare professional if any of the above apply to you before starting treatment.
