What is Beconase?

Beconase is a steroid nasal spray used to relieve symptoms of hay fever, allergies and allergic rhinitis.

It contains beclometasone, a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation inside the nose. This calms the body’s allergic response to triggers such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander, helping to ease symptoms like:

  • Sneezing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Itching and nasal irritation

Beconase is designed for regular use, as it works best when used consistently rather than for immediate relief. It may take a few days to feel the full benefit.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Beconase nasal spray can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most side effects are mild and occur in the nose or throat, particularly when treatment is first started or if the spray is not used correctly.Common side effects include:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Dryness, irritation or soreness inside the nose or throat
  • Unpleasant taste or smell after using the spray

How to use Beconase

Before using the spray for the first time, gently shake the bottle and prime the spray by pressing it a few times until a fine mist appears.

  • Blow your nose gently to clear your nostrils.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Remove the protective cap.
  • Close one nostril and insert the nozzle into the other nostril.
  • Aim the spray slightly away from the centre of the nose (towards the outer wall).
  • Breathe in gently through your nose and press the spray once.
  • Repeat in the other nostril if required.
  • Replace the cap after use.
  • After use, avoid blowing your nose for a few minutes to allow the medicine to work.

Beconase works best when used regularly, not just when symptoms are severe. It may take a few days for symptoms to improve and up to two weeks to feel the full benefit.

Do not use more than the recommended dose. If symptoms do not improve or worsen, seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor. Always use Beconase exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as advised by a healthcare professional.

Who is Beconase not suitable for?

For some people with allergic rhinitis or other allergies, Beconase may not be the most suitable treatment. This is because it can interact with other medicines or may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions.

You should not use Beconase if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are under 18 years of age
  • You are allergic to beclometasone or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
  • You have recently had surgery on your nose
  • You have suffered a recent injury to your nose
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional
  • You have ulcers, sores or an infection inside your nose
  • You have or have previously had tuberculosis (TB)

Your GP or pharmacist will assess whether Beconase is safe and suitable for you based on the information you provide about your medical history, current health conditions and any medicines you are taking. It is important to tell your healthcare professional if any of the above apply to you before starting treatment.
