Overview

What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms caused by allergic reactions. It works by blocking histamine (H1) receptors, helping to reduce symptoms such as sneezing, itching and watery eyes that occur during allergic responses. It is commonly used in the UK to treat hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).

What Fexofenadine is used for?

Fexofenadine is used to treat symptoms of allergic conditions, including:

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives)

What symptoms can Fexofenadine treat?

It can help relieve symptoms such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy nose or throat
  • Red, itchy or watery eyes
  • Raised itchy rash or hives

These symptoms occur when the body releases histamine in response to allergens such as pollen, dust mites or animal dander.

How does Fexofenadine work?

Fexofenadine belongs to a group of medicines called second-generation antihistamines.

During an allergic reaction, the body releases histamine, which binds to H1 receptors and causes inflammation, itching and swelling. Fexofenadine blocks these receptors, preventing histamine from triggering allergy symptoms.

Unlike older antihistamines, it does not easily cross the blood–brain barrier, which is why it is less likely to cause drowsiness.

Side effects

Common side effects:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

These effects are usually mild and temporary.

Rare but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, which require urgent medical attention.

Precautions

Before taking fexofenadine, it is important to ensure that it is suitable for you. You should speak to a healthcare professional before using this medicine if any of the following apply:

  • Fexofenadine tablets should be taken with water and preferably before food. It is also recommended to avoid drinking fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange or apple juice at the same time as the medicine, as they can reduce how much of the drug is absorbed by the body.
  • You are taking other medicines that may interact with antihistamines
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have or previously had heart disease
  • You have kidney problems

If you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness, you should seek urgent medical attention.

Directions

Directions for Use

Always take fexofenadine exactly as advised by your doctor, pharmacist, or according to the instructions provided with the medicine.

Recommended dose for adults

  • 120 mg once daily for seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • 180 mg once daily for chronic urticaria (hives)

How to take fexofenadine

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • It is recommended to take the tablet before food.
  • Avoid taking the medicine with fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange or apple juice, as these may reduce how much of the medicine your body absorbs.
  • Take the tablet once daily at the same time each day to maintain consistent relief from allergy symptoms.

If you miss a dose
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two tablets at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much
Taking more than the recommended dose may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness or dry mouth. If you think you have taken too much, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
