Description

Lactulose is a sweet-tasting oral solution designed to provide gradual and effective relief from constipation. Lactulose supports natural bowel function by increasing stool water content, making bowel movements more comfortable. Lactulose may also be used under medical supervision for managing hepatic encephalopathy by lowering ammonia absorption.

  • Osmotic laxative for constipation relief
  • Helps soften stools for easier passage
  • Suitable for short-term or ongoing use as advised
  • May be prescribed for hepatic encephalopathy

Directions

Take Lactulose exactly as directed by your doctor or as stated on the product label. Lactulose is usually taken once or twice daily, and the dose may be adjusted depending on response. Lactulose can be taken with or without food and may be mixed with water or fruit juice if preferred.

It may take up to forty-eight hours for Lactulose to produce a bowel movement. Always use the measuring cup or spoon provided to ensure accurate dosing.

Ingredients

Lactulose contains lactulose solution as the active ingredient, a synthetic sugar derived from lactose. Lactulose may contain small amounts of related sugars such as galactose and lactose.

Lactulose also contains purified water and may include trace manufacturing residues. Always check the label if you have diabetes or sugar intolerances, as Lactulose contains sugars.

Warnings

Do not take Lactulose if you have galactosaemia or a known allergy to any of its ingredients. Consult your doctor before using Lactulose if you have diabetes, lactose intolerance or persistent abdominal pain.

Prolonged use of Lactulose without medical supervision is not recommended. If diarrhoea, cramping or electrolyte imbalance occurs, reduce the dose and seek medical advice. Keep Lactulose out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Lactulose used for?

Lactulose is commonly used to treat constipation by drawing water into the bowel to soften stools. It is also prescribed to help manage hepatic encephalopathy by reducing ammonia levels in the blood.

  • How does Lactulose work in the body?

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed into the bloodstream but instead reaches the colon unchanged. There, it is broken down by bacteria, increasing stool water content and promoting regular bowel movements.

  • How long does Lactulose take to relieve constipation?

Relief from constipation may take up to one or two days after starting treatment. It is important to continue taking it as directed, even if the effect is not immediate.

  • Can Lactulose be taken every day?

Lactulose can be taken daily if prescribed by a healthcare professional for ongoing constipation or liver-related conditions. Dosage should be adjusted according to response and medical advice.

  • Are there any common side effects of Lactulose?

Some people may experience bloating, gas, or mild abdominal discomfort when starting treatment. These effects are usually temporary and may lessen as the body adjusts to the medication.
