Treatment Details

Microgynon 30 functions as an oral contraceptive medication containing levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol as its primary active components. These ingredients work together to inhibit ovulation throughout the menstrual cycle. Distinguished by its reduced oestrogen content compared to many combined contraceptive pills, Microgynon 30 offers a lower-hormone alternative.
The Microgynon ED variant shares identical contraceptive properties with Microgynon 30 but comes in 28-tablet packs designed for continuous daily use. The last seven tablets are hormone-free placebo pills. This daily-dosing format helps establish a consistent routine, reducing the likelihood of forgetting to resume treatment after the pill-free interval.

How does it work?

Conception happens when sperm fertilizes an egg released by the ovaries. During a typical menstrual cycle, one egg is released monthly through ovulation—a process regulated by progesterone and oestrogen, the body's natural sex hormones. Microgynon 30 incorporates synthetic versions of these hormones (levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol), which regulate hormone levels to prevent egg release. Additionally, the pill increases cervical mucus thickness, creating a barrier that makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.
In a standard cycle, the uterine lining (endometrium) thickens to support a potential fertilized egg. Microgynon 30 limits this thickening process, further decreasing the chance of embryo implantation. A beneficial side effect of this is that menstrual periods typically become lighter.
Beyond contraception, Microgynon 30 may help reduce acne and provide protective effects against certain conditions including fibroids, ovarian cysts, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It should be noted that this medication does not offer protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Directions

How to take Microgynon

For optimal protection, start Microgynon 30 on day one of your menstrual period. Beginning within the first five days of your cycle provides immediate contraceptive coverage.
For Microgynon 30 (21-tablet packs):
Each strip contains 21 tablets. After completing one strip, take a 7-day break during which withdrawal bleeding will occur. Resume with a new pack after the seven-day interval.
For Microgynon ED (28-tablet packs):
Take one beige-coloured active tablet daily for 21 days at approximately the same time each day. Follow with the seven larger white placebo tablets for the remaining days of the cycle, maintaining continuous daily dosing.

Missed Dose Protocol

If you forget a tablet, take it immediately upon remembering, even if this means taking two tablets in one day. Missing a single day typically maintains contraceptive protection. However, if multiple doses are missed, use backup contraception for the subsequent seven days.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Microgynon and how does it work?

Microgynon is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing two synthetic hormones: levonorgestrel (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). It works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining to prevent implantation.

  • What's the difference between Microgynon 30 and Microgynon ED?

Microgynon 30 comes in 21-tablet packs followed by a 7-day break, while Microgynon ED contains 28 tablets (21 active and 7 placebo) for continuous daily use. Both provide the same contraceptive protection; ED simply helps maintain a daily routine.

  • How effective is Microgynon at preventing pregnancy?

When taken correctly, Microgynon is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, typical use effectiveness may be lower due to missed pills or other factors.

  • Does Microgynon protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

No, Microgynon only prevents pregnancy. You should use barrier methods like condoms to protect against STIs.

  • When should I start taking Microgynon?

Ideally, start on the first day of your period for immediate protection. If you start within the first 5 days of your cycle, you'll still be protected. Starting at any other time requires additional contraception (like condoms) for the first 7 days.

  • How late can I take my pill before it's considered "missed"?

Generally, you have a 24-hour window. If you're more than 24 hours late, follow the missed pill guidance.
